What is inside
Due Date by Dr. Sunil Kumar G S is a practical guide designed to address the everyday concerns that arise during pregnancy. Written in simple, accessible language, the book helps readers understand what to expect throughout the pregnancy journey while separating commonly held beliefs from reliable guidance.
The book explores a wide range of topics relevant to expecting parents, including pregnancy discomforts, nutrition, fitness, and the importance of choosing the right doctor. It also discusses essential medical tests and scans, helping readers become more familiar with the different aspects of pregnancy care.
A key focus of the book is addressing misconceptions surrounding pregnancy. From beliefs about morning sickness and a baby’s gender to traditional ideas about food and nutrition, Due Date encourages readers to approach pregnancy information with greater awareness.
The book also recognises that pregnancy is not solely the mother’s journey. It considers the role of the father-to-be and the importance of shared understanding and support as couples prepare for parenthood.
Drawing on Dr. Sunil Kumar G S’s professional and personal experiences, along with inputs from specialists across obstetrics, nutrition, fitness, dermatology, and psychiatry, the book presents pregnancy through a multidisciplinary perspective.
Due Date is written for expectant mothers, fathers-to-be, couples planning for parenthood, and family members who want to better understand the pregnancy journey.
It is particularly useful for first-time parents seeking an approachable reference for common pregnancy questions, lifestyle considerations, medical care, and the transition into parenthood.
Excerpt
From “A Bag Full of Gratitude”
Motherhood is one of the most precious roles a woman could embrace in her life. I recently read a quote on motherhood by the famous Lebanese author Sandra Chami Kassis: “You never understand life until it grows inside of you”. If you are reading this book, you must be going through this phase in your life or preparing to become a mother.
I have seen many couples struggle to get pregnant even after undergoing several treatments. One of the major misconceptions among married couples is that pregnancy will occur naturally. According to a study conducted on married women by *FPA, a sexual health company, around 30 percent got pregnant just a month after marriage.
Furthermore, 75 percent became pregnant within the first six months, and almost 90 percent of them were pregnant within one year. These cases fall under the natural conception method, where sexual relations between the husband and the wife led to pregnancy, which was not aided by any medication. However, the remaining 10 percent of these women needed more time. The association did a study on these women to understand this delay in their conception.
One major issue they found was the unreadiness of accepting a new family member’s arrival. Unless your mind and body are ready to accept the pregnancy, you will not be able to conceive even if you have undertaken many treatment procedures. I had a patient struggling to get pregnant, and after taking treatment for five years, she finally became pregnant.
Upon inquiry, she revealed her heart-breaking story. She and her husband were married for 11 years. At first, there were no issues between them, as they thought that pregnancy would happen naturally. Both of them were working professionals in multinational companies (MNCs) and had tight schedules. After six years of marriage, they realized that there could be some underlying issues as she was unable to conceive. So, they consulted a Doctor, and both of them underwent thorough check-ups.
However, the Doctor could not find any problem with either the husband or the wife. So, the Doctor prescribed ovulation-inducing medicines to the woman for three consecutive cycles. However, even after following the medication plan, she was not able to conceive. As a last resort, they opted for in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. They approached an infertility center and underwent the IVF procedure thrice. However, even this proved to be futile, and the couple was left devastated.
