What is inside
Fertility and Nutrition by Dr. Kamini Rao and Rohit Shelatkar explores the important relationship between food, lifestyle, reproductive health, and pregnancy. Combining scientific research with practical guidance, the book helps readers understand how everyday choices may affect fertility before conception, during pregnancy, and after childbirth. fertility and Nutrtion book-dra…
The book examines both female and male fertility, including the influence of age, body weight, stress, dietary patterns, micronutrients, exercise, environmental factors, and lifestyle habits. It also looks at nutrition for a healthy pregnancy and addresses concerns such as neural tube defects, pregnancy-induced hypertension, gestational diabetes, anaemia, miscarriage, and preterm birth. fertility and Nutrtion book-dra…
Beyond pregnancy itself, the authors explore how maternal nutrition can influence the long-term health of the mother and child, as well as the importance of post-pregnancy nutrition. Throughout the book, scientific concepts are presented alongside practical dietary and lifestyle considerations, while recognizing the value of individualized advice from healthcare and nutrition professionals. fertility and Nutrtion book-dra…
This book is for couples planning a pregnancy, individuals seeking to better understand fertility, expectant mothers, and new parents interested in informed nutrition and lifestyle choices.
It may also serve as a useful resource for gynecologists, fertility professionals, dietitians, nutritionists, medical students, and healthcare practitioners looking for an accessible overview of the connection between reproductive health and nutrition.

From “Prelude — i”
Parenting begins before conception: Yes! Emerging research reveals that parental influences begin even before conception. Science continues to reveal more and more evidence that maternal age, diet, and nutritional status, among others, significantly impact several fertility aspects and the quality of eggs, which can impact future offspring. fertility and Nutrtion book-dra…
Ageing: Only Wine Gets Better
Ageing is related to a drop in the ovarian reserve of eggs and a decrease in the quality of eggs that is up for grabs. It is essential to understand that the quality of an egg is a vital element in the ability to conceive. The quality of the egg lies chiefly on its genetic material - deoxyribonucleic acid, popularly known as DNA. DNA, along with some proteins, tightly packed like a spool of yarn, form chromosomes. Each chromosome has bodyguards called telomeres (protective caps of chromosomes). Ageing shortens the telomeres, affecting an individual's chromosomes and, therefore, the fertility potential. fertility and Nutrtion book-dra…
Not just ageing, telomere shortening can be influenced by physical activity, body mass index, smoking, chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, dietary antioxidants, and vitamin deficiencies.
Stress: It’s Just a Mess!
Most of us deal with the immense stress of the 21st-century lifestyle. Unfortunately, it belongs to the list of factors that contribute to infertility. Psychological stress can negatively impact the maturation of the oocyte (egg). De-stressing can aid in increasing conception rates. fertility and Nutrtion book-dra…
Weighing It Out: Impact of Body Composition on Conception
Underweight and, to a greater degree, overweight and/or obesity are related to an enhanced risk of infertility.
An egg requires massive energy to process chromosomes correctly and execute all other processes necessary for proper maturation. All these are supported by the powerhouses called mitochondria. The mitochondrion, stated, is a miniature powerhouse that converts nutrients into a form of energy that the cells of the body can use.
Embryogenesis (the development of a fertilized egg) is also an energy-demanding process, and oocyte-derived mitochondria are required to support it. A meager food intake, strong dietary restrictions, and a general lack of nutrients not only cause a loss of both body weight and physical performance but also delay puberty and lengthen the postpartum interval to conception. Moreover, they are also known to lower reproduction-related hormone (gonadotropin) secretion, and this alters ovulation cycles (the process by which eggs are released from the ovary for fertilization) and is thereby linked to increased infertility. fertility and Nutrtion book-dra…
Very slim women (BMI, body mass index <20 kg/m2) have a 38% higher risk of infertility than women with average body weight (BMI 20–24 kg/m2). This is simply because reproduction involves much more energy expenditure for females than males. As a protective mechanism against undernutrition, women's reproductive capacity is closely linked to their nutritional status.
