What is inside

Here’s How I Did It! brings together the personal stories, experiences, and perspectives of 21 experts from different professional backgrounds. Rather than presenting success as a single formula, the book explores how each individual responded to setbacks, recognised opportunities, made important decisions, and developed approaches that helped shape their careers, businesses, and lives.

Across the chapters, readers encounter perspectives on entrepreneurship, leadership, personal transformation, marketing, professional growth, purpose, employee engagement, online business, and decision-making. The stories range from unconventional career journeys and entrepreneurial transitions to lessons about becoming an expert, discovering purpose, building businesses, and learning from both success and adversity.

At the heart of the book is the idea that experience can shorten another person’s learning curve. By sharing the moments that tested them, the decisions that changed their direction, and the strategies that supported their progress, the authors offer practical insights grounded in real journeys rather than abstract theory.
The collection also demonstrates that achievement can take many forms. Different backgrounds, industries, ambitions, and challenges lead to different definitions of success, giving readers a broad range of perspectives from which to draw their own lessons.

This book is for entrepreneurs, professionals, aspiring leaders, business owners, students, and readers interested in personal development and real-world success stories.
It is particularly relevant to those looking for experience-based insights on overcoming setbacks, building confidence, making better decisions, developing a career or business, and finding a more purposeful path forward.

Excerpt

From “I Never Really Had a Job and That Made All the Difference — Jane Mark”

My partner, Phil Basten and I, have a wonderful and successful online Advertising business.
We started our business 14 years ago and built it from a tiny, unknown company to one that has taken in multiple 7 figures over the years. We were able to do this because I never had a job.
Yes. It’s true. I never really had a job and that made all the difference.
The Bloomingdales Factor...
I hate working for someone else. I decided, at the tender age of 17, to never work for anyone else again.
I came to that conclusion after a terrible week of work at a well-known New York City store called Bloomingdales.
The work turned out to be the stuff of fools and I quickly decided that there had to be a better way to earn money than to "suffer fools gladly."
Bloomingdales is an upscale department store in New York City and a job there was considered classy.
I got my job at Bloomingdales the good old-fashioned way through nepotism. A family member owned the store.
I needed a summer job and so the owner of the store pulled some strings for me.
There I was bright eyed and bushy tailed- ready to give my all to Bloomingdales and become the best summer employee the store had ever known.
My first day, they put me on the main floor in watches. I learned everything there was to know about watches and by the end of day 1, I knew my citizen brands from my Anne Klein’s. I found out what the best sellers were for men and women and I showed those best sellers to anybody walking by who would listen.
I became an instant expert on watches of all kinds and by noon I had actually sold quite a few. I rocked up the next morning ready to outsell everyone on the first floor of Bloomingdales, and then... some dour looking lady with a pinched mouth and a perpetual scowl took me by the arm and said: "We are sending you to Men's jackets on floor 7 today."
"But I don’t know anything about Men's jackets", I proclaimed perhaps a bit more loudly than I should.
"You will learn", said the dour looking lady from personnel and off I went.
