What is inside
Journalism in Theory and Practice by Reech Malual brings together the theoretical foundations of journalism with insights shaped by field reporting, media management, and communication practice. Drawing on the author’s experience as a journalist and Media & Communications Manager, the book examines journalism not only as a profession but also as a way of understanding societies, communities, and the forces that shape public life.
The book explores journalism, communications, and public relations across print, digital, PR, and emerging media. It considers how journalists gather information, communicate across different sections of society, and adapt professional practices as technology continues to reshape how news is produced and consumed.
Alongside practical aspects of reporting and communication, the book addresses accuracy, neutrality, journalistic ethics, media responsibility, and the challenges professionals encounter while working in difficult environments. It also examines the often unseen pressures and risks faced by field journalists, highlighting the need to balance professional integrity with the realities of reporting.
By connecting journalism with anthropology and sociology, the book encourages readers to look beyond events themselves and consider the communities, cultures, relationships, and social conditions behind them. Journalism in Theory and Practice is for journalism and media students, aspiring reporters, working journalists, editors, media managers, communication professionals, and public relations practitioners.
It is particularly relevant for readers seeking to understand both the academic foundations of journalism and their practical application in an evolving digital media landscape.
Excerpt
From “Foreword”
While a singular, universally accepted definition remains elusive, journalism is generally conceptualized as the systematic and principled process of gathering, verifying, and disseminating news, commentary, and feature content. This critical societal function, crucial for fostering informed public discourse and ensuring the accountability of power structures, is operationalized across a diverse spectrum of platforms. These encompass traditional modalities such as newspapers and magazines, established electronic media formats like radio and television, and the dynamically evolving contemporary digital ecosystem, comprising websites, blogs, webcasts, podcasts, and social media platforms.
Historically, the conceptualization of journalism was predominantly confined to the dissemination of current events via print media. Nevertheless, the transformative emergence of radio, television, and the internet during the 20th century profoundly reconfigured its operational paradigms, consequently expanding its reach and purview to encompass all forms of mediated communication pertaining to current affairs, and thereby necessitating a continuous adaptation of methodologies while preserving its foundational objectives.
This ongoing evolution, particularly the pervasive shift to digital formats, has ushered in a complex landscape of both unprecedented challenges, such as the proliferation of misinformation and evolving revenue models, and significant opportunities, including enhanced global reach and interactive engagement with audiences, thereby necessitating a fundamental re-evaluation of journalistic practices and ethical considerations (Forja-Pena, Orosa and García, 2024).
Indeed, this digital transformation has not merely altered the media ecosystem but profoundly reshaped it, distinct from the advent of radio and television, because it infiltrates and revolutionizes every phase of the news process from content gathering and verification to production, distribution, and consumption, fundamentally redefining how information is created and consumed (Canavilhas and Fátima, 2024).
