Fibromyalgia often referred to as an ‘invisible disease’, affects a person physically and mentally. Along with fatigue, sleep disturbances, and mood swings, patients with fibromyalgia deal with widespread muscular pain, which disrupts their daily activities.
When I got to know that I was dealing with fibromyalgia, I was not very familiar with the condition. In fact, it took me a while to even realise that I was suffering from fibromyalgia.
Intensified pain, muscle tenderness, fatigue and restlessness are some of the major symptoms of this illness. These symptoms are quite common and are seen in several other diseases like hypothyroidism, anaemia, rheumatoid arthritis, Lyme disease, multiple sclerosis, and even cancer. So, it gets very difficult to diagnose fibromyalgia at the very first go. This is the reason I called it tricky earlier.
Usually, patients with fibromyalgia experience difficulties in walking, lifting and performing daily activities. Joint pain in the neck, shoulders, back, and hips are very prominent. Although fibromyalgia is not fatal, it's definitely something that will bother you throughout your life, if not treated at the right time. The pain experienced is unimaginable.
1 PAIN IN FIBROMYALGIA
The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) defines pain as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. The patients who suffer from chronic pain go through a lot as they cannot explain their situation to anyone. Sadly, how much ever advanced our medical field is, there is no definite cure for fibromyalgia to date.
Fibromyalgia was not considered a serious illness by anyone two decades ago. Since the pain kept shifting from one part of the body to another, many patients were accused of faking their pain. However, in 1990, when the American College of Rheumatology first published its list of symptoms, the entire world began to learn about fibromyalgia. Currently, fibromyalgia is discussed and talked about like any other chronic illness.
Patients with fibromyalgia often complain of a stabbing-like feeling and muscle and joint stiffness, which usually worsens when the body is idle with no movement. This is surprising because overworking and being involved in a lot of physical activity is usually seen as the root cause of fibromyalgia. But the fact that pain is experienced even while resting is what makes fibromyalgia a difficult disorder.
