What is inside

Chronic pain can affect mobility, sleep, work, and overall quality of life. Yet many people struggle to understand why pain persists, what is happening inside the body, and which treatment options may be relevant to them.

In Living Pain Free: The Alleviate Way, Dr. Swagatesh Bastia draws on his experience in orthopaedics and pain management to explain chronic pain in clear, accessible language. Through everyday analogies and case studies, he helps readers understand the structures in the body that can contribute to pain and how chronic pain may develop over time.

The book explores different pain conditions, symptom patterns, and approaches to management. It discusses the role of nutrition, lifestyle choices, movement, and healthy habits in supporting long-term wellbeing.

Readers are also introduced to treatment options used in pain management, including regenerative medicine approaches such as prolotherapy and Platelet-Rich Plasma, commonly known as PRP. A dedicated chapter on symptomatology provides a practical reference for identifying different pain conditions and understanding when professional medical guidance may be needed.

Rather than treating pain as an inevitable part of ageing, the book encourages readers to become more informed about their bodies and the choices available to them.

This book is written for people living with chronic or recurring pain, individuals exploring treatment options, and family members supporting someone with persistent pain.It is also relevant to readers interested in preventive health, healthy ageing, mobility, and making informed lifestyle choices that may support a more active and comfortable life.

Excerpt

From “Title Page”

Chronic ailments like hypertension, diabetes, and thyroid disorders have been accepted by society as agents with substantial potential for threat to good health. They have been studied and researched for many decades, and today we are blessed to have excellent treatment protocols for each of these. On the other hand, chronic pain is perceived by many as something innocuous, a peril of aging, or even as an inevitable companion for the rest of their lives. People do not realize that chronic pain soon makes itself comfortable and starts its vicious circle of harm, and in no time, it is defeating the host in the everyday battle of life!
As you can see from the list of pains and conditions discussed later in the book, chronic pain literally resides in every household. Studies have shown that approximately 30 percent of people across populations are suffering from chronic pain at any given point in time.
Though it has a preponderance for old age, the heightened daily stress levels in today’s multifaceted lives have enabled chronic pain to make its presence felt in the lives of young adults as well.
Chronic pain ushers a wave of negative emotions like anxiety, fear, and an overbearing omnipresent feeling of being unwell. The growing anxiety is fueled by increasing pain, which in turn keeps alerting the brain to the ongoing tissue damage and harm. This makes the brain increasingly sensitive and focused on the pathology that induces changes in the nervous system leading to more pain and anxiety. As a result, the affected individual becomes less mobile and is caught deeper in the web of pain and anxiety!!
A person battling the vicious cycle of chronic pain uninterrupted over a period soon begins to lose motivation and underperform professionally, straining relationships and experiencing a gradual but imminent decline in happiness and quality-of-life index!
Usually, any pain lasting over three months is referred to as chronic pain. Chronic pain may be present continuously in certain conditions or it may be brought on by certain activities or actions, such as pain associated with arthritis.
Sometimes chronic pain may not have an associated physical cause like an injury or illness. This kind of pain may be brought on by stressful conditions or anxiety. This is termed psychogenic or psychosomatic pain. Whatever the cause of chronic pain, it can lead to a lot of other distressing symptoms in the sufferer. Chronic pain leads to anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, mood swings, etc. It can seriously affect the quality of life of the patients.
