What is inside
Miles and Moments by Manya Bhatia takes readers on a journey across more than 20 countries, exploring destinations through curiosity rather than the usual tourist checklist. Drawing on her personal travels and academic interest in global economies, Manya looks beyond landmarks and photographs to understand what gives each place its distinctive character.
The book revisits well-known destinations such as Paris, New York, London, and Milan, while also introducing readers to lesser-known places and experiences. Through these journeys, Manya explores local culture, international cuisines, commerce, history, and the circumstances that have influenced the development of different cities.
Food forms an important part of this exploration. The book considers local cuisine not simply as something to taste, but as a reflection of geography, tradition, history, and the people who call a place home. Alongside this, Manya examines how cities have evolved over time and offers her perspective on where they may be headed. At its core, Miles and Moments encourages readers to travel with greater curiosity, asking not only what they are seeing, but why a place looks, feels, and functions the way it does.
Miles and Moments is written for travellers, students, young readers, food enthusiasts, and anyone curious about different cultures and cities.
It is particularly suited to readers who enjoy travel writing that combines personal experiences with perspectives on culture, cuisine, commerce, history, and the stories behind destinations around the world.

Austria
“The hills are alive with the sound of music, with songs they have sung for a thousand years. The hills fill my heart with the sound of music. My heart wants to sing every song it hears.”
— Maria in The Sound of Music
My earliest memories as a child include watching many great movies with my parents. One such movie was The Sound of Music. If you have watched this classic musical, you know that along with the plot, the cast, and fantastic songs, the thing that really hooks you to the movie is its setting and location.
The first time I saw Austria was in this particular movie. I could not help but notice how the place looked like it was out of a fairy-tale; knowing that the site was 100% real was another joy. So, you can imagine my excitement when we actually got to visit the place.
Austria is a landlocked country surrounded by Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. I mean, What a fantastic line-up!
I was shocked to find out how many famous things, people, and practices have originated in Austria. Don’t believe me? I’ll give you a tour. Let’s start with the basics: Beverages.
Dietrich Mateschitz visited Thailand in 1982. He was an entrepreneur at heart, so he wasn’t just touring around Thailand. He was looking for opportunities. He was particularly looking for something to cure his jetlag.
His fortune changed when he discovered an energy drink called ‘Krating Daeng.’ Although they are different entities, Dietrich Mateschitz collaborated with the Yoovidhya family, the founders of the Krating Daeng, to create Red Bull. The formula was adjusted to meet the western taste palate. The Yoovidhya family still owns 51% of Red bull.
How about Europe’s most famous pastry, the croissant? When you hear the word croissant, you instinctively picture a tiny café in Paris. A coffee cup, fruit bowl, and a croissant are on the table waiting to be devoured. All that is nice, of course. But croissant isn’t French. Croissant comes from Vienna, the capital city of Austria. In Paris, croissants and other pastries are called Viennoiseries.
But croissants aren’t the only thing to emerge out of Vienna. This beautiful city has been home to great musicians, like Mozart. Don’t be surprised if you happen to hear ‘Eine kleine Nachtmusik’ in your mind during the entirety of the tour. It is as if it was composed to describe the beauty of Vienna.
