What is inside
Once Upon...and Beyond by Varun Anand is a collection of imaginative stories that moves across forgotten histories, magical lands, distant galaxies, adventurous expeditions, and extraordinary kingdoms. Each story opens the door to a different world while inviting readers to think about the choices, emotions, and ambitions that shape people and societies.
The book journeys through ancient history returning to influence the present, explorers confronting dangerous seas and the vastness of space, and kingdoms rising or falling because of human decisions. Along the way, readers encounter unusual characters and unexpected situations that explore contrasting sides of human nature, including kindness and greed, courage and vanity, wonder and betrayal.
At the heart of the collection is a fascination with possibility. What might happen if the boundaries of the world suddenly changed? What secrets might another universe reveal? And how would ordinary people respond when placed in extraordinary circumstances?
Through storytelling, adventure, and imagination, Varun creates worlds that encourage readers not only to follow the characters but also to form their own questions and interpretations. The stories move between fantasy, history, exploration, and reflections on human behaviour, making each journey different from the one before it.
Once Upon...and Beyond is for young readers and anyone who enjoys imaginative storytelling, fantasy, adventure, history, exploration, and unexpected worlds.
It may particularly appeal to curious readers who enjoy stories that combine entertaining adventures with questions about courage, choices, relationships, ambition, and what it means to be human.
Excerpt
From “Title Page”
Once upon a time, in a realm before your memories began, there was a boy with an imagination that knew no bounds. Each morning, he awoke with visions of fantastical futures, picturing worlds where cars could fly and robots befriended children. He even predicted the unfolding of his own days, and peculiarly, these predictions often came true.
One chilly morning, he envisioned a scene involving his math teacher and a bright yellow locker. By sheer coincidence—or so it seemed—the very next day, as his teacher walked past the lockers, the ground shook gently. Amidst the chaos of a sudden tremor, a locker tipped over right into her path, and she slipped, just as he had imagined. Realizing the potency of his visions, the boy began to write them down. He kept a special notebook adorned with stars and moons, where he scribbled his visions under the title “The Secret of Stories and Their Wonder.” He believed that recording these tales might contain their magic, unaware that each penned story continued to weave itself into reality.
As the years slipped by, the boy grew older, but his notebook never left his side, filling up with tales of adventures and wonders beyond the ordinary eye.
When he reached the ripe age of 97, he felt a stir of adventure once more. Packing nothing but his notebook, he embarked on a mysterious journey, driving into the sunset of an unnamed place he had always wanted to visit.
Weeks passed, and no word came from him. His phone, left behind, rang unanswered. Concerned, his children reported him missing. Despite exhaustive searches and years of investigation, no sign of him or his car was ever found.
The police eventually closed the case, and over time, people began to move on. But the mystery of his disappearance lingered in the air like a half-told tale.
Where did he go? What adventures did he find? Perhaps, somewhere in the folds of reality and imagination, he continues his journey, forever narrating his own mysterious story in a world only he could conjure.
