What is inside
The human brain is one of the most complex organs in the body. When neurological conditions affect its functioning, patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals often face questions that are difficult to understand and even harder to answer.
In Rebooting the Brain: Part 1: The Journey of Hope, Prof. Dr. Sharan Srinivasan and Dr. Prathiba Sharan bring together their expertise in neurosurgery, neurorehabilitation, and neuropsychology to make neuroscience more accessible and relevant to everyday life.
Through a combination of medical knowledge, intriguing stories, clinical experiences, and personal reflections, the book explores the complexities of neurological conditions and the challenges associated with rehabilitation.
Each chapter is designed as a self-contained exploration of a particular topic, allowing readers to approach the book according to their interests and needs. The authors encourage readers to take their time, understand the concepts, and reflect on how this knowledge can support better awareness of brain health.
The book also shares experiences from the authors' professional journey, including challenges, unexpected developments, and stories of progress. These accounts offer a human perspective on neurological care while highlighting the importance of understanding the brain beyond its anatomy and functions.

December 2019...Dr. Prathiba receives a WhatsApp message from an unknown number at 3 am. She opens the message... It is from a US phone, a person named Sajiv Gulati, reaching out desperately needing help to rehabilitate his wife, Nina Gulati, who had suffered a major brain stroke a few months earlier in Chicago and is currently bedridden and basically in bad shape.
Dr. Prathiba - “Talking about Nina’s experience, I think this is one patient who gave me the confidence that our rehab results are not inferior to any Western countries, which I had thought were much, much superior before having this experience with Nina. So, though she was a US citizen, and the stroke happened in the US, they were well to do, with a huge medical insurance cover, and they tried a lot with the insurance and stuff like that to get into the best of the rehab facilities there.
Unfortunately, Nina wasn’t able to get any relief from there for various reasons. So, Sanjiv was frustrated; he decided to bring her to India for rehab as he also had family support (which had lots of doctors in India and abroad) and began googling ‘best neuro rehab centers in India,’ and we appeared!
So, he basically found us online, and we had long chats on WhatsApp, WhatsApp calls, and so on. That’s when I realized that there is this one man who really loves his wife and is willing to do anything to get his wife back to normalcy.
So, he was willing to bring her to Bangalore and take the therapy as long as she needed. I think that it takes a lot from a husband, especially somebody from out of the country. He had to sort out his work and his business and come over to India with a caregiver. He initially decided to stay here for almost a month
