From “Embracing the Unknown – the Journey From Engineer”
Life is made up of crossroads. At each and every moment in our journey, there is a choice to be made, and these major decisions can be difficult, leading you to completely different destinations.
Imagine standing at a crossroads—one path leading to a predictable career with stability and the other an uncertain journey filled with challenges but unlimited possibilities. You’ve spent years building a solid foundation to establish yourself in this predictably successful job, and yet, you can sense it. A pull, a nagging voice urging you to step into the unknown. Do you take the leap or stay in your comfort zone?
My journey started as a trainee, where I witnessed the company's immense growth over 11 years, moving from the G.E.T. position to the regional chief.
After this, I desired to gain exposure to the international market, so I relocated abroad for a year and worked as the country head. I returned to India soon after, and then began my fresh start with a new business division. In two years, that business division witnessed tremendous growth as well.
After shifting between companies multiple times, I soon realized that I could brave the difficult journey of becoming an entrepreneur. There’s one thing that an entrepreneur requires: the belief in their own ability to consistently prove their capability and become a key person in their industry. I was well aware of that desire within me, so I shifted industries one and a half years ago and started a new organization.
I also knew I would be moving into something big when I transitioned from a structured corporate role to entrepreneurship. The decision was not easy, but it was necessary. This chapter is meant to explore how embracing uncertainty is the first step toward extraordinary success and how knowledge, adaptability, and resilience fuel the journey.
The leap from employee to entrepreneur is an essential but uncomfortable transformation.
Entrepreneurship is not just about having a business idea but also about transforming your mindset. The transition requires courage, adaptability, and a deep understanding of the industry ecosystem. This chapter will guide you through the emotional, intellectual, and strategic shifts necessary to embark on this journey.
Why Leaving Stability Feels Risky, but Staying Stagnant Is Riskier
Bengaluru witnessed a water crisis the previous year, and merely two weeks later, it would hit cities like Pune. This was a clear sign that the country's water conditions needed to improve. However, with so much necessary correction and improvement, it can be daunting to step into the industry, knowing that business and livelihood could be unsteady. Especially, depending on how well customers and governing bodies react.
Yet, we picked it up. The overarching lack of consideration for free water continuously puts the country in this state. If we don’t fix it, despite wanting to, then no one would ever take the initiative. That’s what entrepreneurship builds up to: taking hard decisions no one else wants to. Leaving a familiar path for one that hasn’t been explored before can be worrying and stressful.
However, we had a clear principle: “High risk, high gain; low risk, no gain.”
Fears, whether personal or professional, tend to hold people back more than any external obstacle does. Whether bogged down by a fear of failure, rejection, or judgment, these small, vine-like negative thoughts creep up through cracks and somehow convince us to suppress our ambition and talent and become complacent.
