What is inside
The Mother Earth by Pochender S. explores the relationship between human progress and the environmental systems that support life. It examines how an anthropocentric approach to development has contributed to resource depletion, environmental damage, and the growing climate crisis.
Drawing on his experience in sustainable development and environmental engineering, Pochender explains the causes and consequences of climate change in accessible terms. The book connects individual behaviour with larger systems of consumption, production, waste, and resource use, helping readers understand how everyday choices can influence long-term environmental outcomes.
A central theme is the need to move away from wasteful, linear models of consumption. The book introduces the waste hierarchy, better waste management practices, and the principles of a circular economy, where materials and resources are used more efficiently through reduction, reuse, recovery, and regeneration.
It also explores the importance of sustainable lifestyles and encourages readers to rethink habits, consumption patterns, and the environmental cost of development. Rather than presenting climate change as a distant or abstract issue, the book frames it as a present challenge that requires responsibility at both individual and collective levels.
The Mother Earth is written for students, professionals, sustainability practitioners, policymakers, business leaders, urban planners, and environmentally conscious readers.
It is especially relevant to those seeking a clearer understanding of climate change, waste management, circular economy principles, responsible consumption, and sustainable development.
Excerpt
From “Introduction”
Humankind is staring at the black void of extinction. We can no longer selfishly exploit the finite resources on Earth. Now, the time is to look beyond treating our Mother Earth as a mere commodity. As Barack Obama once stated, “Climate change is no longer a problem far-off. Climate change is real, and it is happening here and happening now.” The very symptoms of a deteriorating Earth are visible in every stratum of human life.
Do you feel the haphazard and drastic changes in seasons all around the year? Winters are shortening but growing bitter with each passing year. Every summer seems hotter than the last while the news channels beam into our homes the images of the melting glaciers in the polar icecaps. The groundwater level is dropping at a constant rate as there prevails a sheer dearth of rainwater. Don’t we see this dearth widening with each passing year? A reduced state of rainfall has been preventing the constant refilling process.
It was a regular affair for our planet to go through alternating warming and cooling phases. Even before humans first appeared on Earth, there had been a sequential alteration in the Earth’s climate. The solar system and Earth’s geographical markers have played around several natural instigators to cause the changes in Earth’s atmosphere.
The Sun’s intensity, volcanic eruptions, and changes in naturally occurring greenhouse gas concentrations are considered the natural causes of climate change. However, since the mid-20th century, climatic changes have grown to a considerable state of seriousness. According to NASA, even though natural causes play a role today, their influence is limited while explaining the rapid warming seen in recent decades.
We have to understand that the Earth’s climate system mechanics are simple. The energy from the Sun is reflected off the planet, goes back into space, and helps the Earth remain warm enough to sustain the growth of different species. When the Earth absorbs the Sun’s energy beyond a certain level, or when atmospheric gases prevent the heat released by the planet from radiating into space, i.e., the greenhouse effect, the planet warms. Both natural and human activities influence the Earth’s climate system. Unfortunately, humankind has now taken the reigns and has been damaging Mother Earth in the most brutal way.
Let us understand that climate change is defined as a significant variation of average weather conditions becoming warmer or drier over several decades or more.
