Unbridled Imagination

Perhaps, the defining factor of my life and every journey I have embarked upon thus far, is to strike roots deep into what I am and then spread my wings and fly high to discover what more I can be. My evolution as a businessman on foreign soil despite rooted in my land of birth and its culture, is illustration enough.
Striking Roots
I was born and brought up in Mangalore, Karnataka, India. I come from a large joint family, in which every member was a successful businessman in his own right. During my younger formative years, I was strongly influenced by my family who were shrewd businessmen as much as they nurtured and valued family ties and relationships. A culture of ethical conduct of business, generosity, big heartedness and godliness was ingrained in us at a young age. In my perspective, a holistic and strong cultural environment is the foundation upon which successful and long-lasting business empires are built. This is the most important family legacy that I have resolutely passed on to my children.
My paternal grandfather owned a shipping business and my maternal grandfather ran a timber business. In 1978, at the age of 21 I made my foray in the world of business and took over my father's thriving timber business. I remember my father objecting to my rigorous working schedule even then. Nevertheless, I wouldn't slow down my pace. I had to reach my goals.
Stepping Stone
I consolidated the timber business in India and expanded it to the markets in the Middle East. In 1997, I perceived a huge opportunity in real estate in Ajman, where I was able to acquire several buildings on lease and started off with rental and leasing business, even as the assured growth rates were phenomenal.
The turning point in my life and career was a chance encounter with the ruling family of Ajman. Once on my way to Africa, I had to transit through Dubai. I had a chance encounter with a member of the ruling family. We discussed the economy of Ajman and ways to develop and boost it. During this discussion, I told him about how a small town near Mangalore transformed into a prominent hub for medical education after a medical college was set up by a visionary businessman. I casually stated that establishing a medical school could generate innumerable opportunities for the economy of Ajman.
A few days later I was invited to meet the Ruler of Ajman who proposed a request to set up a medical school in Ajman. By the grace of Almighty, I was able to set up the Thumbay Group in the UAE and we founded the Gulf Medical College (presently Gulf Medical University). This project in many ways was a launch pad for Thumbay Group's diversification into multiple industrial segments. After this there was no looking back.
