You were checked out this week

In this lesson: the five silent checkouts happening around every senior leader, and three tests to run tonight (WATCH VIDEO till end for instructions).

Transcript:

Sometime this week, someone important looked you up.

Before a meeting. Before a referral. Before a decision that affects your career, your practice, or your company.

They typed your name into a search box, or they asked AI about you — and they formed an opinion about you before you ever walked into the room.

And here's the uncomfortable part. Nobody will ever tell you it happened.

In the next few minutes, I'm going to show you where these silent checkouts happen, why the most accomplished leaders usually do the worst in them, and three simple tests you can run tonight to see exactly where you stand.

No theory. Just things you can check yourself, today.

Now, why does this matter so much?

Because the biggest decisions about you are no longer made in front of you. They're made in that quiet moment when someone checks you out. And if what they find doesn't match what you've actually built — you lose. Quietly. Without even knowing you were in the running.

Let me tell you how I learned this.

I've spent decades in publishing. I've written five books of my own, and I've personally guided more than two hundred and sixty business leaders — CEOs, founders, doctors, senior professionals — through becoming published authors.

And over all those years, I noticed a pattern that honestly troubled me.

The most accomplished people who came to me... were the most invisible. Not the least accomplished. The MOST accomplished.

I remember one leader — I won't name him — who had rebuilt an entire company. Thousands of jobs. A genuine turnaround story. And when a board seat opened up at another firm, they shortlisted him... and then picked someone else. Someone with honestly half his track record.

Later, someone on that board told him privately: "We looked you both up. The other gentleman... there was just more there."

More THERE. Not more substance. More FINDABLE substance.

That sentence changed how I think about careers.

So here's my philosophy, and I want you to really sit with this.

Your work speaks for itself — but only in the rooms you're already in.

Read that again if you need to. Your colleagues know your worth. Your clients know. Your board knows. But your next big opportunity — the board seat, the investor, the dream client, the star hire — almost always comes through someone who does NOT know you yet.

And that person doesn't ask around anymore. They check you out.

So let's get practical. There are five silent checkouts happening around every senior leader. See which ones matter in your world.

One. The board check. Before any board seat, advisory role, or big appointment, somebody on that committee looks you up. Always.

Two. The client check. Before a large deal is signed, the buyer compares you and your competitor — online, quietly, over a weekend.

Three. The investor check. Founders, listen. Before a term sheet, investors research YOU as much as your numbers.

Four. The talent check. That brilliant senior person you want to hire? They researched you before the interview. What they found shaped their answer.

Five. The referral check. Doctors, lawyers, consultants — when someone recommends you at a dinner table, the very next thing that happens is a search on a phone. If the search is weak, the referral dies right there.

Five checkouts. At least two of them are operating in your life right now.

Now — how do you find out how you're doing? Three tests. Do them tonight. Takes ten minutes.

Test one. The search test. Open a private browser window and search your own name, plus your field. Don't search like you. Search like a stranger who just heard about you. What comes back? Is your thinking there — or just a profile and a company page?

Test two. The AI test. Ask any AI assistant, "Who are the most respected leaders in..." your specific field, your market. Read the names that come back. Is yours one of them?

Test three. The shelf test. Walk into a good bookstore, or browse online, and look at the shelf for your industry. Somebody wrote those books. Some of those authors have less experience than you. How does that feel?

Most leaders fail at least two of these three. And I want to be very clear — that is NOT a verdict on your ability. It's a gap between what you've built and what the world can find. Two totally different things. The first one took you decades. The second one, honestly, can be fixed much, much faster.

A few quick do's and don'ts.

Don't panic-post. The answer to a weak checkout is not suddenly flooding LinkedIn for two weeks. Everyone sees through that.

Don't dismiss it either. "I'm not into all this online stuff" — I hear this from brilliant people all the time. The checkout doesn't care whether you're into it. It's happening anyway.

Do run the three tests honestly. Tonight.

And do write down the gap you find, in one sentence. "People checking me out would find X, but what I've actually built is Y." That one sentence is the beginning of fixing it.

So here's your first step. Tonight, run the search test. Just that one. Search yourself like a stranger would.

And then come back and tell me in the comments — which of the five checkouts matters most in your world? The board check, the client check, the investor check, the talent check, or the referral check?

I read every comment. And in my next video, I'll show you what the leaders who WIN these checkouts have actually built — it's not what most people think.

Follow me so you don't miss it. I'll see you there.
