What is inside
In Diabetes No More, Dr. Bhujang Shetty shares his personal experience of living with diabetes and the dietary changes that shaped his approach to managing the condition. Drawing on his journey and interest in nutrition, he explores the relationship between food, metabolic health, and emotional well-being.
The book is divided into two parts, offering readers a perspective on both physical and mental health.
Part A: Food and Your Health examines how the body uses carbohydrates and fats for energy, the role of insulin, and the development of insulin resistance. Dr. Shetty discusses sugars, processed foods, obesity, and lifestyle-related conditions while explaining his approach to a low-carbohydrate, healthy-fat diet.
Readers will also find chapters on intermittent fasting, stress management, and continuous glucose monitoring. A practical question-and-answer section addresses common concerns about dietary changes, while a collection of recipes provides meal ideas aligned with the author's nutritional approach.
Part B: Happiness and Peace moves beyond physical health to explore the relationship between thoughts, emotions, and everyday experiences.
Through reflections on self-awareness, personal beliefs, and the distinction between reacting and responding, Dr. Shetty encourages readers to consider how their mindset influences their sense of well-being.
Together, these two sections present his view of health as a combination of nutrition, lifestyle habits, and inner balance.
Diabetes No More is written for individuals living with Type 2 diabetes, people interested in understanding insulin resistance, and readers exploring the relationship between food and metabolic health.
It is also relevant to family members supporting someone with diabetes and individuals interested in preventive health and emotional well-being.
The book offers the author's experiences and perspectives rather than a substitute for medical care. Readers should consult their healthcare professionals before making significant dietary changes or adjusting diabetes medication.
Excerpt
From “1 My Story”
However, bad habits are not easy to break. Despite all the awareness that has been created, people still smoke, bringing harm to themselves and the people around them. As our lifespan increases, our health quotient should increase proportionately.
Everything changes if you start looking at food as something that influences our immune system. An unhealthy diet could cause incalculable damage to our health. While we cannot control everything in life, the food we consume is completely under our control. There will be barriers [beliefs, opinions, assumptions, traditions, cultures], but if you want a long and healthy life, then take a step towards bettering it today! Take it step by step — one day at a time.
Prevention is always better than cure. Instead of consulting a doctor after things go out of hand, take preventive measures before you fall ill. Start by looking for some easy-to-prepare low carbs healthy fat recipes, and choose ingredients and flavors that you and your family relish. The key is to focus on eating for the betterment of your health. A healthy diet offers many of the healthy nutrients you need, including omega-3 fatty acids, fibers, antioxidants, various minerals and vitamins, which have significant health benefits. The World Health Organization says that it is never too late to start eating better and people who followed a healthy dietary pattern saw a two-year rise in life expectancy.
Food plays a social and ceremonial role in many cultures, and has a cultural connotation for many, with vegetarian and non-vegetarian diet being preferred by different sections of the society. This is very evident, especially in countries like India, which has so many cultures and traditions. 'Atithi Devo Bhava' is something Indians follow. We never send a guest back without offering food, and sometimes tend to even force-feed them. Overzealous Indian mothers tend to overfeed their children without realizing the harm it can do to them in the long run.
Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, once said, "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food," indicating that a healthy diet plays a major role in the prevention of lifestyle diseases.
On the contrary, food addiction is a lifestyle disease demonstrated by the fact that we constantly crave food, eat compulsively, and find it difficult to control these urges despite being aware of the adverse consequences. But the power is within you to make a healthy choice, and you should be determined to achieve it and not stop until the goal is reached.
