Excerpt
From “The Road Less Travelled — Rajesh Dembla”
The cactus is a metaphor for life. In spite of everything, it survives in the most severe & ruthless of conditions. Well, why do I start on this note? My story is that of a young boy who lost everything, his home, his family, and relatives. However, I never gave up on myself & charted my own life. My childhood has been one of loss and struggle. We were a large family of 35 people, living under a single roof. Getting two square meals a day was what we struggled for. On hindsight, I attribute the poverty and struggle to lack of education. None in my family was formally educated. Education was not a priority. Nevertheless, I enjoyed school. I looked forward to going to school, I liked to learn. That thirst for learning, for knowledge has been my saving grace.
I was a topper in class. I dreamt of studying engineering. I even nursed the ambition of studying to an Ivy League institution! Until I turned 12. Two incidents changed my life irrevocably. I was totally thrown off gear. The 105-year-old ancestral house in which we lived was destroyed in a torrential rain. I was in the house when the building collapsed. I remember being rescued and looking at the collapsed rumbles not knowing what will happen to me or my family. Next I lost my father a month later. It was like as if the world had come to an end. I just lived with no purpose for the next 3 years. Every time I saw my friends living a secured life with parents to care for them, I wondered what wrong had I done to deserve this.
My lesson: Both these incidents made me realize that nothing is certain or permanent.
By 15, I completed my 10th grade and was told by my mother that we cannot afford for me to go to college. If I wanted to, I need to do it on my own, while I also support the family financially. I had to immediately look for a job. That happened, I landed a job. I was so elated, that I didn't bother to find out the nature of work I was expected to do. The next morning when I went to work I found out my job profile - office boy; sweep, mop the floor, fill up water, clean the office, fetch breakfast for employees, clean plates - that was my job description. I could have quit and run, but I knew this would fetch me a salary that would suffice for a college admission fee. I swallowed my pride and took everything that was thrown at me. I survived.
