From “Where Knowledge Fails, Faith Triumphs”
The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed fervidly for God to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements and in which to store his few possessions.
But then one day, after searching for food, he arrived home to find his little hut going up in flames. The worst had happened; everything had gone in dark coils of smoke. He cried. Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the whizzing sound of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him.
The disheartened, weary man asked his rescuers: "How did you know I was here?"
They replied: "We saw your smoke signal."
It is easy to get discouraged when things are going bad. But we shouldn't lose heart, because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering. Remember, the next time your little hut is burning to the ground -- it just may be the smoke signal that summons the grace of God. The year was 2007. Our younger child was in pre-nursery. The older one was in standard 1. Pradeep Chauhan, my doctor husband, developed breathlessness and polyserocitis--a condition in which practically all the membranes of major organs are filled with fluid. Tests revealed typhoid fever and superadded viral infection.. Despite quick, timely treatment, his condition worsened. Further diagnosis revealed that his pericardium, the layer surrounding the heart, was filled with water. The layer that should have been 1mm thick had become 1cm. He had gone wholly bedridden and his condition was progressively deteriorating.
I wasn't willing to admit defeat, although my own education and learning hinted otherwise. I had to do something. When I am confronted with a situation that cannot be approached conventionally, I resort to my instinct and faith. I did the same.
