Excerpt
From “Acknowledgments”
We generally build several dreams during our teenage, hoping that we will grow up to become the person we dreamt we would become. But like Bettina Arndt rightly said, life is something that pops up while you're still busy crafting other plans. Codes and computers have been my playground ever since childhood. I worked my brain well enough to absorb all the nuances of computer language. The thing with programmers is when people talk in standard English, we communicate using codes. I could only imagine getting hired by some top IT company; nothing more, nothing less.
Although cerebrally advanced, I was never that typical bookworm kind of an individual. I was a happy-go-lucky guy with a keen interest in hands-on and practical things. I used to love learning interesting techniques related to computers. I was an introvert in school, but as I grew up, I realized I needed more friends and more fun. I could see everyone hanging out on weekends and having the best time of their lives, which naturally instilled a major FOMO in me. In no time, I made friends with a number of incredible people in college. I would say it was a sudden flip. It is never easy to transform from an introvert to an extrovert just like that. It did take me a lot of time and effort.
I come from a family where everyone believes in government jobs and services. There was not even a single person who owned a business. Business, in an average Indian family, is generally directly associated with loss of money. Little do they realize the coin has two sides. If one is a failure, certainly there is success and profit on the other side. Like any other Indian mother, my mom also wanted me to pursue the traditional path of finding a nice job after scoring well in college. Well, I won't blame her because that was what I had also planned for myself- to find a job as a programmer! I finished my undergrad in computer science with flying colors and started off my career as a programmer in a famous tech firm.
I was having a pretty good time with my colleagues and managers. However, I could also sense that I didn't fit perfectly inside the team, just like a puzzle with a little thicker edge that cannot squeeze itself into the picture despite being the right piece. My managers were truly supportive and sensible, but again, like I said, I had a constant urge to improve so many things within the organization. My brain, which was initially fully immersed and drowning in the world of computers, decided to come to the surface of the waters and take a panorama view of the business world. "well, should I move out of the company and start exploring and learning new things?", I asked myself. The answer was certainly a "yes," after which I joined IIMA to pursue a master's in business administration, which is a two-year course.
